Inside Our Walls

Without leaving our building, there are many opportunities for you to use your talents in the life of the church and to support mission projects outside our walls.
Acolytes
Our Acolyte Program invites students in grades 4–8 to take an active role in worship leadership. Acolytes help open our Sunday services by lighting the candles, symbolizing the presence of Christ among us. Each acolyte typically serves at one worship service per month, making this a meaningful and manageable way for young people to grow in faith and leadership. For more information email office@fumcbirmingham.org.
Angel Tree
Each year, our Angel Tree Ministry shares the love of Jesus by providing Christmas gifts to 350 children in our community who have a parent in prison. In November, volunteers help by making phone calls to learn each child’s needs, purchasing and wrapping gifts, and delivering them in time for Christmas. More details and volunteer opportunities will be available in November 2026.
Days for Girls
Since 2015, church members have been sewing components for reusable feminine hygiene kits distributed worldwide by Days for Girls International. These kits—assembled and shipped from the Farmington Chapter—are given primarily to young girls in underdeveloped nations, along with vital health education. Many have been delivered by our own missionaries to FUMC mission sites in Cuba, Honduras, Kenya, and Costa Rica. We welcome volunteers to help sew or cut fabrics, and financial donations are always appreciated to support this life-changing work. For more information email  buff.cummings@gmail.com.
College Care Packages
Throughout the school year, we send college students care packages filled with inspirational messages, small treats, and candy. If you or your student would like to receive a package, please email the address to cschulte@fumcbirmingham.org. Even if the address is the same as last year, please resubmit it for the new school year. If you would like to donate items or help assemble packages, contact Sue Smith at sue.smith@beachcom.net
Communion Servers
One need not be ordained to assist in preparing the elements or serving Holy Communion during worship. Participation simply requires a reverence for the sacrament and a willingness to offer your service as you are able. For more information email office@fumcbirmingham.org.
Christian Life Center (CLC)
Do you have a welcoming spirit and a heart for building community? Our Christian Life Center (CLC) Volunteers create a warm, friendly environment for guests, church members, and fellow volunteers. The CLC offers opportunities for our community to strengthen both body and mind through activities such as yoga, pickleball, and indoor walking—while fostering genuine connections. We have a variety of volunteer openings in the mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends. Come be part of making the CLC a place where everyone feels at home! Email the CLC at clcstaff@fumcbirmingham.org.
First Nurses
Our First Nurse Ministry is made up of professional nurses who share both their medical expertise and their spiritual care with members of our church family in need. They offer monthly blood pressure checks and provide compassionate support. If you are a nurse who feels called to use your skills in service to others, we would love for you to join us. For more information email office@fumcbirmingham.org.
Greeters & Ushers
You can help make worship a warm and welcoming experience for everyone who walks through our doors! We have opportunities for people to serve as greeters—whether on a regular schedule (like the first Sunday of each month) or on the weeks you’re available. Greeting is a simple but powerful way to get to know others in your church family while extending Christ’s love to all. Email Melissa Ng at mjoyng@comcast.net.
Outreach & Connecting Ministry
This ministry assists potential, new, and returning members in navigating the many opportunities available within our congregation. We welcome those who are committed to fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging active participation in the life of the church. For more information email office@fumcbirmingham.org.
Hunger Ministry
Our Hunger Ministry works to raise awareness and provide relief for hunger in our local community and around the world. You can help by offering loose change, donating home-baked goods, fresh produce, flowers, and non-perishable food items, using your Kroger Card, and supporting special Hunger Ministry events. Together, we can make a difference—one act of kindness at a time.
Fair Trade Equal Exchange Sale
On the second Sunday of each month, stop by Fellowship Hall after worship to shop fair trade products. Fair trade ensures farmers receive a fair share of the price for their goods and often provides resources to help them improve their farming and business practices. Your purchase supports justice, sustainability, and dignity for growers around the world. For upcoming dates email office@fumcbirmingham.org.
Missions Candle
Honor or remember a special person or event while supporting mission work through the lighting of the Missions Candle on the altar. A donation of $30 or more goes to our Partners in Mission fund, which supports local, national, and international mission projects. Your gift shines a light that reaches far beyond our sanctuary. For more information email office@fumcbirmingham.org.
Music Ministry
Whether it’s singing in a vocal choir, ringing in a bell choir, playing with the Praise Band, or performing in the First Orchestra, there’s a place for every musician here. If you have a passion for music, come share your gifts and be part of this joyful ministry that inspires our worship and our community. For more information email music@fumcbirmingham.org.

Twice a year, we gather clothing donations and send up to 24 boxes to help children in Sneedville, Tennessee. Many hands make light work—come be part of this meaningful effort to share warmth and care with those in need. For more information email office@fumcbirmingham.org.
Welcome Desk Helpers
Volunteer at the Welcome Desk at Birmingham First, or join our list of volunteers who can be called to help with funeral receptions and other special events at both campus locations. Your willingness to serve helps create a warm, caring environment for all who walk through our doors. For more information email office@fumcbirmingham.org.
Rummage Sale Volunteers
Our Rummage Sales, sponsored by United Women in Faith, help fund 30 mission projects each year. It takes more than 700 volunteers to make the sale a success!
