Sermon Information for February 1

Rev. Zack L. Dunlap preaching
“God Is Up to Good Things”
Philippians 1:3-11
This is a Sunday you don't want to miss! Brave the weather and come out if you are in the Berkley area, or worship with us online. The music will feature new and familiar modern worship favorites, and Pastor Zack will bring a message on how God is continually up to good things. The brokenness of the world can feel overwhelming at times, and it seems there is little that we can do to make an impact. Yet, God can put us to good use as agents of transformative love. And, friends, God is just getting started! This week's scripture reminds us that "he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion."

Attend worship Sunday at 10:00 a.m., in-person at 2820 12 Mile Road in Berkley, or online. Click a button below to attend worship online.

Announcements

Torrey Family | After the Fire
On January 27, the Torrey family experienced a devastating house fire. We are grateful to share that everyone is safe, with only minor injuries, though the loss has understandably turned their lives upside down. Beth Torrey serves as our Children & Family Ministry Coordinator and UNITE 3-on-3 Basketball Coordinator, and her family is deeply woven into the life of our church. Their children are active in many areas, including volunteering, youth group, and Sunday School. Pastors have been present for immediate needs, and family members are providing temporary shelter as longer-term housing options are explored. If you feel called to help, click here.
Noisy Bucket Challenge Begins this week!
Four times this year we’ll invite our children to bring in coins and offerings to help us reach a special giving goal. For our first quarter, our goal is $300, which will be donated to our mission partners in La Corosa, Honduras, to help fund new playground equipment.Throughout February and March, noisy buckets will be available each week for children to fill with their spare change. To wrap it all up, on the last Sunday in March, the children will take part in a Noisy Bucket Run through the Sanctuary — our final, joy-filled push to reach our goal! Questions? Email Julie White at jwhite@berkleyfirst.org.

By donating blood through Versiti, one of the nation’s largest and most trusted blood providers, you can help ensure hospitals have the supply they need for surgeries, medical treatments, and emergencies. A single donation can save up to three lives, and the process typically takes about an hour, with most donors experiencing little to no side effects. Adults ages 17 to 79 are eligible to donate, and all blood types are needed, especially O-negative, the universal donor. Giving blood is a tangible way to love your neighbor, support our wider community, and offer hope when it is needed most.  Click here to schedule your time to give.

Find Rest at Anapausis

This gathering is centered on worship immersion—where music carries the message and Scripture and reflection are woven throughout the songs rather than delivered in a traditional sermon. It’s an intentional space to slow down, breathe, and be present with God in the middle of the week. No rush, no pressure—just music, prayer, and room to listen.

#240 Arbon Dennis Chapel at Birmingham First (1589 West Maple Road, Birmingham), or via Zoom, led by Roz Townes

First Steps: Exploring the Bible is an invitational class designed to help you feel more comfortable and confident as you approach the reading and study of God’s Word. Rather than answering every question, this class focuses on what to notice, helping you discover the Bible’s main story and the threads of truth woven throughout Scripture. Together, we will explore the big picture of God’s unfolding Kingdom, the depth of God’s love and pursuit of people, and the light of Christ at the heart of it all. Whether you are new to the Bible or returning with fresh curiosity, First Steps offers a welcoming place to begin—and to enjoy the journey. For questions or a zoom link, email roztownes@icloud.com. Books are available at no cost in the church office.

Ash Wednesday & Lent

Ash Wednesday offers a meaningful moment to slow down, reflect, and acknowledge our deep reliance on God’s grace. Marking the beginning of Lent—the 40 days that lead us toward Easter—this holy season calls us into practices of prayer, repentance, and spiritual renewal.
